about

Soundtrack for the theatre piece »Stromberger oder Bilder von Allem« played at Vorarlberger Landestheater, Bregenz, between March 3 and April 7 2024.

///

Around 80 years after the end of the Second World War, the era of contemporary witnesses is coming to an end. How can we counteract forgetting today, at a time when right-wing nationalist thinking is regaining strength? What role models can we find in the rubble of history to encourage us today? Which stories continue to have an impact today?

At the center of Gerhild Steinbuch's commissioned play for the Vorarlberger Landestheater is the biography of Maria Stromberger. The Catholic nurse volunteered to go to Auschwitz in 1942. She wanted to see »what it was really like« and became an active supporter of the resistance movement in the concentration camp. After the war, she lived in seclusion in Bregenz. As she was accused of being involved in the mass killings in Auschwitz, she was temporarily imprisoned together with local "greats" of the Nazi state. Former prisoners from Auschwitz campaigned for her release and rehabilitation. Only in recent years, however, has Maria Stromberger's life story been thoroughly reappraised and honored.

Four protagonists embark on a search in the play. They are children of the 1990s, the »decade of freedom« and right-wing extremist attacks in Austria and Germany. They search for an appropriate way of remembering the Holocaust and the difficult and contradictory ways in which it has been dealt with in post-war Austria up to the present day. Where are the limits of remembrance, of »how it really was«, of what is worth remembering? How can we dare, despite all the difficulties? How can we live with a past that is not dead, not even past?
